PD Day child care to be offered by Catholic division next school year

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After receiving feedback from parents that there was a shortage of child care available during professional development days for teachers, the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education will be offering child care starting next school year.

The idea initially started last November break, with parents saying it was difficult to arrange childcare. The Catholic school board decided to make two changes.

First, release the jurisdictional calendar a month earlier to allow more time for parents to plan.

Secondly, offer $50-a-day child care on PD days, the November break and during the last week of the Christmas holidays from 7:30 a.m to 5 p.m. for students in kindergarten to Grade 6.

Supt. Dwayne Zarichny hopes it will help families and programs will be offered in the north and south areas of Medicine Hat.

“We have trained child-care providers that will be developing a program and students will be engaged in a variety of different activities throughout the day,” Zarichny said. “Depending on the time of the year, it could also include a field trip somewhere.”

In order to staff and launch the program successfully, families are required to pre-register which is now open.

Child care is only open to students registered in Medicine Hat Catholic Schools for the 2022-2023 school year.
