MP Motz named to oversight committee examining Emergencies Act

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner MP Glen Motz has been named a member of the oversight committee that will examine the invocation of the Emergencies Act last month.

Motz is one of two Conservative MPs named to the oversight committee, that will also include three Liberals and one MP each from the Bloc and NDP.

One senator from each of the four parties will also serve on the committee.

Motz, who spoke out against the invocation of the Emergencies Act, says the oversight committee is required as part of the legislation governing its use.

“For me and for Canadians, just the transparency about what information was available that created the need for the government to institute or invoke the Emergencies Act is certainly something that will be important for Canadians to know,” says Motz.

The MP says he feels it’s important to learn from this instance in the event the act is ever needed again.

The committee begins its work on Monday when it will set up the rules and procedures for its operation.

A timeline for a final report to Parliament has not been set.
