Tigers run out of gas in 7-3 home ice loss to Oil Kings

MEDICINE HAT, AB – One period of going toe-to-toe with the CHL’s top ranked club wasn’t quite enough for the Medicine Hat Tigers to stretch together a win streak.

The Edmonton Oil Kings took advantage late in the second period of Wednesday’s contest at Co-Op Place with a pair of goals before the intermission, part of four straight tallies for the visitors in a 7-3 victory over Medicine Hat.

Oren Shtrom netted a pair in the loss for the Tigers including a power play goal midway through the second to tie up the game at 3-3, before the Oil Kings capitalized on a number of Medicine Hat turnovers.

Edmonton’s Justin Sourdif opened the game with his 17th goal of the season from Carter Souch just 5:16 into the first period, before Medicine Hat quickly countered under two minutes later.

A point shot by Rhett Parsons was tipped home courtesy of Logan Barlage for the tying goal, bringing the Tigers even 1-1 less than seven minutes in.

In his penultimate appearance at Co-Op Place, former Tiger Josh Williams vaulted the Oil Kings back into the lead 30 seconds later with a breakaway marker beating Garin Bjorklund.

Before the end of the period though, Medicine Hat answered back off a puck turned over at the Edmonton blue line which was fed across to Shtrom from Dru Krebs off the rush to tie things up at 2-2 before the intermission.

Cole Miller made good on a tip from Medicine Hat product Dawson Seitz less than five minutes into the second to restore Edmonton’s one-goal lead, before Shtrom finished off a pretty passing play on the man advantage to once again bring the Tigers level.

The tide began to turn in the final two minutes of the middle frame for Edmonton, as call-up Hayden Wheddon recorded his first WHL goal in his first WHL contest with a tip on a Carter Kowalyk point shot in what would be the eventual game-winner.

Williams added his second of the night with 50 seconds remaining in the period on another breakaway tally, helping to swing the momentum back in the Oil Kings’ favour.

Edmonton came out of the intermission with a goal by Jalen Luypen to extend Medicine Hat’s deficit to three goals, while Sourdif sealed the deal with a shot from the high slot late to make it a 7-3 game.

Unable to pick up back-to-back wins for the first time since October, the Tigers will look to respond on Friday night in Red Deer as they launch into a home-and-home series with the Rebels.
