Ryan Meili resigns as Saskatchewan NDP leader, will stay on as MLA

Feb 18, 2022 | 10:36 AM

SASKATOON – Ryan Meili says he is resigning as the Saskatchewan NDP leader.

Meili says he will remain in caucus as the member of the legislature for Saskatoon Meewasin for at least one more session, before deciding whether he will stay in politics.

He says he will continue as interim leader until the party selects someone new.

That person will be the NDP’s fourth leader since Lorne Calvert retired in 2008.

Meili was first elected leader of the Opposition in 2018, but the party has not been able to grow its 13 seats in the legislature.

The NDP lost a long-held seat in a byelection Tuesday in the northwestern constituency of Athabasca, where a Saskatchewan Party member was elected for the first time in the province’s history.
