29 new cases in city, 749 in province

Active COVID-19 cases drop slightly in Medicine Hat; provincial hospitalizations jump

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Medicine Hat has dropped for the first time since the fourth wave began in the middle of July.

There are 523 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Friday.

Medicine Hat has had 1,986 total cases – the 523 active, 1,439 recovered and there have been 24 deaths.

There are 29 new cases in the city in the past 24 hours and 32 new recoveries.

The city has the second-highest cases rate per 100,000 people at 767.8. Banff is the highest at 1,092.8.

COVID-19 outbreaks are being found across the city, including at a popular nightclub, continuing care centres and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Thursday that AHS South Zone currently has 21 COVID-19 positive individuals in hospital. There are 15 at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, with five of those in the ICU. Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge has five inpatients, with two of those in the ICU. The Pincher Creek Health Centre has one inpatient.

On Tuesday the City of Medicine Hat announced a COVID campaign encouraging residents 20-40 years to get vaccinated. They say the majority of cases in the city are in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people in that age group.

58.4 per cent of Hatters in that group have received one dose, 48.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 71.7 have received at least one dose of vaccine and 64.6 are fully vaccinated.

62.2 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 56 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 6,709 active cases in the province, up 342 from Thursday, and 233,945 recovered cases in the province, up 406.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 242,997.

There are 749 new cases in the province in the past 24 hours and 1,095 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 221 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 48 of which are in ICU, and 2,343 deaths.

The province completed 9,005 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 8.3 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,477,098 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

Province-wide, 77.2 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 68.5 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Albertans of all ages, 65.6 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 58.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 912 active cases and 12,768 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 140.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 2-8 is 1.25. It is 1.09 in Calgary Zone, 1.41 in Edmonton Zone and 1.41 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from July 19-25 the numbers were 1.48 province-wide, 1.50 in Calgary Zone, 1.37 in Edmonton Zone and 1.48 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 425 cases. There are 86 active cases, 338 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 53.4 per cent, the two-dose rate is 46.5. The county has the third-highest case rate per 100,000 people at 761.2.

The County of Forty Mile has 161 total cases. There are three active cases, 155 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 31.1 per cent, the two-dose rate is 27.8.

The MD of Taber has 594 total cases — 18 active cases, 570 recovered and there have been six deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 38 per cent, the two-dose rate is 34.

Special Areas No. 2 has 113 total cases – seven active cases, 105 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,564 total cases — 23 active cases and 1,526 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 15 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 265 cases — 11 active cases, 251 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 52.1 per cent, the two-dose rate is 45.4. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 477 total cases. There are seven active cases, 467 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 47.6 per cent, the two-dose rate is 41.8.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,033 cases. There are 130 active cases, 4,863 recovered and there have been 40 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,302 cases, 27 active cases, 1,261 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Aug. 19, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 52,065 cases, 1,381 considered active. There are 50,098 recovered cases and there have been 586 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
