COVID-19 outbreak at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital

Aug 18, 2021 | 9:00 PM

Medicine Hat, AB–Alberta Health Services says an outbreak has been declared at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

According to information posted on Twitter, the outbreak was declared Wednesday in response to an increase in cases among staff, physicians, and patients.

AHS says since the start of August, there have been five patients who contracted COVID-19 while in hospital.

All five of these patients were at the hospital being treated for non-COVID related health reasons at the time.

15 staff and physicians have also tested positive for COVID-19.

AHS says the MHRH remains a safe place to visit and receive care with no increased risk to patients coming to the hospital. Any patient who has tested positive or is experiencing symptoms is being isolated and treated in designated rooms.

As a result of the outbreak, AHS says it has made the “difficult decision” to temporarily restrict visitors to one designated support person effective Thursday, August 19th.

AHS says this is necessary to protect patients, staff, and physicians as we work to limit the spread of the virus.

Exceptions will be made for end of life circumstances upon consultation with the care team.
