53 new cases in city, 817 in province

Active COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions continue to reach new heights

There are 526 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Thursday.

Medicine Hat has had 1,957 total cases – the 526 active, 1,407 recovered and there have been 24 deaths.

There are 53 new cases in the city in the past 24 hours and 28 new recoveries.

The city has the second-highest cases rate per 100,000 people at 772.2. Banff is the highest at 1,048.2.

COVID-19 outbreaks are being found across the city, including at a popular nightclub, continuing care centres and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Thursday that AHS South Zone currently has 21 COVID-19 positive individuals in hospital. There are 15 at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, with five of those in the ICU. Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge has five inpatients, with two of those in the ICU. The Pincher Creek Health Centre has one inpatient.

On Tuesday the City of Medicine Hat announced a COVID campaign encouraging residents 20-40 years to get vaccinated. They say the majority of cases in the city are in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people in that age group.

58.2 per cent of Hatters in that group have received one dose, 48.6 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 71.6 have received at least one dose of vaccine and 64.4 are fully vaccinated.

62.1 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 55.9 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 6,367 active cases in the province, up 434 from Wednesday, and 233,539 recovered cases in the province, up 379.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 242,248.

There are 817 new cases in the province in the past 24 hours and 206 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 198 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 43 of which are in ICU, and 2,342 deaths.

The province completed 9,971 tests in the past 24 hours.

The positivity rate is about 8.2 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,469,437 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

Province-wide, 77.1 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 68.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Albertans of all ages, 65.1 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 58.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 887 active cases and 12,723 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 140.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 2-8 is 1.25. It is 1.09 in Calgary Zone, 1.41 in Edmonton Zone and 1.41 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from July 19-25 the numbers were 1.48 province-wide, 1.50 in Calgary Zone, 1.37 in Edmonton Zone and 1.48 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 419 cases. There are 84 active cases, 334 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 53.2 per cent, the two-dose rate is 46.4. The county has the third-highest case rate per 100,000 people at 743.5.

The County of Forty Mile has 161 total cases. There are three active cases, 155 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 31.1 per cent, the two-dose rate is 27.7.

The MD of Taber has 590 total cases — 15 active cases, 569 recovered and there have been six deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 38 per cent, the two-dose rate is 33.9.

Special Areas No. 2 has 113 total cases – seven active cases, 105 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,559 total cases — 18 active cases and 1,526 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 15 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 261 cases — seven active cases, 251 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 52 per cent, the two-dose rate is 45.3. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 476 total cases. There are six active cases, 467 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 47.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 41.8.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,026 cases. There are 128 active cases, 4,858 recovered and there have been 40 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,297 cases, 23 active cases, 1,260 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Aug. 18, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 51,821 cases, 1,203 considered active. There are 50,032 recovered cases and there have been 586 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
