Giant chess board ready for summer

World’s Largest Chess set back for another summer in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT — Navigating life during the pandemic over the last 15 or so months might have seemed like one big game of chess at times.

But with more restrictions coming off, it’s time to play a game for real on the giant chess board in downtown Medicine Hat.

June 15 marks the opening of the giant board between the Library and the Court of Queens Bench.

The Core Association administers the operations of the board, which gives their members a chance at employment.

If you don’t know a rook from a pawn, Elaine Fitzsimmons with the CORE Association says not to worry.

“Individuals all know the game, and if you don’t know it they’re more than willing to show you how to play chess” says Fitzsimmons.

A game on the giant chess board offers both a mental and physical workout, as the pieces are 4 feet tall and have some weight.

Fitzsimmons says the CORE members can help you move them too.

There are also smaller chess sets available for a game, at no cost.

The giant chess board operates Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
