Transformation underway at the new Community Food & Wellness Hub

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Work is underway to transform the old fire hall on Maple Avenue into a Community Food & Wellness Hub.

The home of the new Medicine Hat & District Food Bank is slated to open by the end of July.

Executive director Celina Symmonds says they were hoping to be open by now.

But unfortunately with COVID and trouble getting equipment across the border, they’re behind in their timeline.

She says the building’s intention is to become a space for all of us to gather.

“You’re going to see a cafe space, you’re going to see a pantry space that people can access emergency food from, an industrial kitchen, four teaching kitchens, as well as a huge garden in the back with a movie theatre and all kinds of really fun things for the community.”

She says clients and participants are also excited about the idea that they can be part of something a little bit bigger and connect with their neighbours and friends.

The food bank has been working towards this goal for five years. Symmonds thanks the community, neighbourhood, and local supporters who are helping make the project come to life.
