May long weekend reminders from RCMP

May 21, 2021 | 10:00 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The May long weekend has arrived and Alberta’s top doctor is asking Albertans to stay close to home and to not travel unless it’s essential.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says to keep any outdoor gatherings to the five-person limit

Meantime, Redcliff RCMP expects a quieter long weekend with people staying home due to the cold weather and COVID-19 restrictions.

But Sgt. Neil Bailey says the traffic unit, sheriffs, and general duty members will still be enforcing quite heavily this weekend.

Their patrols include Elk Water and various campgrounds.

“We always look for impaired drivers and your common traffic violators, speeders, distracted drivers, seatbelt use, and any type of traffic infractions,” he said.

Sgt. Bailey reminds to always have a plan if having a few drinks and to not take the chance of drinking and driving.

He adds that RCMP also see too many distracted drivers with hand-held devices.
