Residents at Valleyview befriend Peko the cat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A stray orange tabby cat in Medicine Hat really took a liking to the residents at AgeCare Valleyview.

The cat named Peko would stop by for visits outside with the seniors.

But he was in rough shape, so staff reached out to the Southern Alberta Humane Society for further care.

President De Seaton says Peko was not micro-chipped and you could tell he had been living outside for a very long time. His ears were repeatedly frostbitten and he had broken nails and teeth.

Peko was in rough shape, and a vet visit found that he has issues with his liver and an internal infection.

Seaton says he is in care, and once he’s feeling better they plan to take him back to Valleyview for a visit before putting him up for adoption.

“All I know is he came for weeks and he would come every day. And only the residents could get near him and he would sit with them in their wheelchairs if they were sitting outside he just loved the residents and he’d come and visit,” she explained.

Seaton says Peko is getting stronger every day, and she keeps in touch with AgeCare Valleyview on his recovery.

His first vet visit was $800 and Peko is now on liver medication, special food, and antibiotics for ongoing infection.
