Catholic school division grads to have in-person ceremony

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Students at Monsignor McCoy High School will be having an in-person graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 20.

After a lot of planning, the graduation will be at Holy Family Parish and will include mass, a cap and gown ceremony and speeches.

Principal Paul Bauche says this is the smallest grad class he has since his time at McCoy.

All 117 Grade 12 students will be able to attend, but friends and family will have to watch virtually.

Bauche says hosting graduation at Holy Family Parish is actually an enhancement on what typically happens.

“We’re able to live stream this event and it will allow for family members who can’t be in Medicine Hat, who would normally gather for an event like this, whether they’re in Calgary or further away, that they can watch that event live both the Mass and cap and gown ceremony,” Bauche said. “They can download and keep that file for the rest of their lives to be able to view that event.”

He says this celebration will be a great outcome to a very difficult year for students.

Medicine Hat and Prairie Rose School Districts are still working on their grad ceremony plans.
