16 Alberta schools now reporting COVID-19 cases, website to identify school cases

EDMONTON, AB – The province’s chief medical officer says there are 16 schools in Alberta with at least one case of a student or staff member attending while infectious.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw said that while there is information circulating that identify more schools with cases of COVID-19, the province’s threshold records only those who attended while there was a risk of spreading.

She also stressed the cases at Alberta schools have been identified as being acquired in the community, “not through transmission from the schools themselves.”

Hinshaw said including those connected to the schools but who hadn’t attended while infectious provided no benefit to the public.

But in an effort to reassure parents, Hinshaw announced the province will be releasing an online map identifying schools with two or more cases of COVID-19.

In a message to parents, Hinshaw said she understands the stresses and that, “this anxiety is natural.”

However, she added, there is still much about the virus that is unknown and, “there is no perfect path,” in dealing with it.
