Low revenue year for Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede

Sep 9, 2020 | 1:49 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With no Stampede to rely on this year, financially, the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede are gritting their teeth and bearing their current low operational revenue.

That’s according to General Manager Jim MacArthur.

He says operational expenses are down as well.

And provincial support over the past number of years is helping right now.

On the federal side, the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has been helpful.

MacArthur says there are reserves.

Adding that they talk about a rainy day fund, but they were not expecting a rainy year.

“I will admit it’s really difficult. I think it depends a little bit on what you include in costs and that sort of thing and some are overhead, some are variable, some are less variable. But I do know that for the month of July which is the month the fair is on, it was a 97 percent decline in revenue. So some of those figures we know about through the information we provide to the government.”

As for events now, he says the smaller events they could have, tend to be rentals at the grounds.

But Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede want to make sure they can do things safely for staff and visitors.

“We sure miss everybody and we do spend a lot of our time trying to figure out how to do some things and there’s a bit of opening up with some smaller things that we can do in the event category.”

MacArthur adds the Carriage House is considered an outdoor facility, which gives them some advantage, and it does have a canopy for events.

He says this time is difficult, but they are hopeful things will improve in the near future.

Meantime, MacArthur says the farmer’s markets have been successful and added a normal feel to this year.

The last one for the season is October 3.
