Come to the Table fundraiser will showcase local producers, foodies

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat and District Food Bank and Neubauer Farms want you at the table.

On Sept. 11, those who register for the Come to the Table initiative will receive or can arrange to pick up a box full of more than enough locally produced ingredients to cook dinner for four.

“It’s really about showcasing locally grown food and how you can use it in your own kitchen and all kinds of different ideas from all around the community,” says food bank executive director Celina Symmonds.

Anyone who registers – which is limited to 125 people – will also get access to a community Facebook page where people will be encouraged to share their favourite ingredients, recipes and the meals they created from the box.

From Sept. 12 to 19 the Facebook page will be continually updated with cooking videos produced by the organizers and celebrity chefs – of which Symmonds is one – and the participants can post videos as well.

Nichole Neubauer of Neubauer Farms will also produce a video that will take people through how food is produced in the local area and feature the local producers involved in Come to the Table.

Come to the Table is a fundraiser for the food bank, and Symmonds says it’s also a way to feature local producers and food lovers.

“We wanted to showcase those local people who are doing really hard work, all of the local agriculture,” she said. “For foodies, you want to be a part of this because you want to be able to showcase what you can do with just a little bit of locally produced food.”

Symmonds hopes people will continue to support the local producers after the fundraiser.

“Try some new recipes after you have the fundraiser with us, buy some local food. We encourage people to use local producers to fill their kitchens.”

You can register for Come to the Table at Eventbrite.

Each box will contain roast, ground beef, lentils, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, carrots, garlic, corn on the cob, milk, butter and canola oil.

Suppliers include Deerview Meats, Neubauer Farms, Red Hat Co-Op, Elkwater Colony, Jenner Colony, Huber Farms, Save-On Foods and Devon Felesky.
