Local LPN uses grant to ensure patient safety

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Pamela Lanz put her best foot forward when the chance to help her patients presented itself in the spring.

Lanz, a licensed practical nurse and the owner of Pamela’s Foot Care Services, was told about the Medicine Hat Business Innovation Grant by Greg Scott of Community Futures Entre-Corp.

“He said it would be a really good opportunity for me to apply and get some financial assistance so I’m where I want to be,” Lanz said.

Where she wants to be is with patients and with patient safety number one in her mind.

Lanz applied for the $15,000 grant and with it purchased a top-of-the-line autoclave for sanitization of her equipment and a podiatry chair.

“It’s a new, autoclave that’s a lot better standards and quality to ensure health-care standards,” Lanz explains.

The autoclave includes a printing device and USB, which Lanz says provides documentation to back up all the equipment cleaning she does.

“It’s a beautiful machine, it holds lots of product and it’s got a USB that prints out the temperature number the load number and it’s very good for documentation and ensuring sanitization of equipment,” she said. “Being that I’m working with infections and droplets, you never know so we want to make sure everything’s sterile.”

Lanz also bought a medical-grade podiatry chair to upgrade the leather recliner she was using.

“I wanted everything up to standard. I didn’t want any questions asked, I didn’t want a reduction in material grade because of the cleaning supplies that I’m using on it to sanitize,” she says.

In Chinook Village, Lanz works with people who, for any number of reasons are unable to cut their own toenails or who have other toenail related problems.
