City work continues to replace old water, sewer infrastructure

Jul 22, 2020 | 10:11 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The final stage of replacing aging water and sewer infrastructure along Division Avenue South begins on July 23.

The intersection at 10th Street and Division Avenue will be closed until about Aug. 6, barring adverse weather and unforeseen delays. Detours will be in place throughout the work period.

In this final stage, crews will remove and replace an air release valve and water vault.

The city says that once this phase is complete, work for this project — which restores underground infrastructure and improves isolation boundaries in the water distribution system — within the roadway of Division Avenue will be complete.

Work to replace aging water and sewer infrastructure on Seventh Street SE between Kingsway Avenue SE and South Railway Street is also ongoing.

On July 29, the intersection of Kingsway Avenue and Seventh Street will be closed. Detours will be in place.

In this phase, crews will replace deep utility infrastructure and introduce additional isolation zones to improve the functionality of the water distribution system. The intersection is expected to be closed until Aug. 20, again barring adverse weather and unforeseen delays.

For this project, the contractor will occasionally work through the night while area businesses are closed to limit the impact of a water shutdown during operation hours.

More information on the projects is available on the city’s website.

The city reminds people to allow crews space to work safely, including adhering to physical distancing standards of two metres, and asks residents to follow all traffic signs and detours related to the work
