Community Foundation seeks callers to form community connections

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta is built on the three pillars of We Grow, We Give and We Inspire and part of inspiring is making meaningful connections within the community.

With the help of a grant from Family Community Support Services, the Community Foundation will create the Keep in Touch program.

“It is an opportunity for community members to sign up as volunteers to make those meaningful connections to citizens of Medicine Hat who may be feeling isolated or are looking for any social, emotional, physical health supports and resources within the community,” said Niki Gray, community engagement coordinator at the Community Foundation.

Volunteer callers are needed to work from home at least two hours a week for the next three months, calling people who may need a friendly voice or information on mental health supports and resources in the community.

Even if the worst of the pandemic is over, Gray says the Community Foundation is looking down the road.

“Definitely we see the need in the community and depending on what the fall looks like whether there will be another increase in cases, they’ll be able to make those connections if they’re at home feeling isolated or employment loss and any life changes as well,” she said.

The Community Foundation applied for the grant in the early days of the pandemic and was just recently approved for it. With it, they’ve launched the Volunteer Program for Vulnerable Populations, which includes Keep in Touch, and hired a volunteer coordinator for the program.
