Annual inspection

Saamis Tepee temporarily closed tomorrow

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat will conduct its annual inspection of the Saamis Tepee on Thursday, forcing the site to close for about eight hours.

Work will begin at 6 a.m. and, weather permitting, will be finished by 2 p.m.

The areas directly below and around the tepee will be off-limits. The parking lot and nearby trails will be open.

Originally constructed for the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics, the Saamis Tepee is a tribute to Canada’s native heritage. Built entirely of steel with a concrete foundation, the tepee is ringed with 10 large circular story-boards depicting aspects of native culture and history.

“The safety of residents and visitors to the site is our first priority,” said Aaron Nelson, manager of community connections and support. “We look forward to reopening the site once the inspection is complete.”
