Jun 22, 2020 | 12:03 PM

Olivia continues to be the most popular name for baby girls in Alberta, while Noah has reclaimed the top spot among names for baby boys.

It’s the sixth year in a row that Olivia has topped the list, with 229 baby girls named Olivia in 2019. Charlotte (188) and Sophia (181) round out the top three

There were 275 baby boys named Noah in 2019. Liam was the second most popular name (234) and Oliver was third (225).

In total there were 13,718 different names recorded over the course of the year.

As usual, pop culture inspired some Alberta parents. Babies were named after Marvel Comics characters Loki and Rogue, Game of Thrones characters Khaleesi and Sansa and Lord of the Rings characters Arwen and Eowyn.

Greek (Apollo, Zeus) and Roman (Juno, Mars, Venus) mythology and geographic locations (Arizona, Salem) were also popular for names.

Alberta families welcomed 51,598 babies in 2019 — 26,328 boys and 25,270 girls.

“One of the most memorable moments for me as a new father was when my wife and I chose the name for our son last fall. Choosing a name for your child is fun and exciting,” said Nate Glubish, minister of Service Alberta. “I want to congratulate all new parents in Alberta and reassure them, as well as Albertans expecting a child in the near future, that we are working every day to make sure your children have a great future in a strong Alberta.”
