Speed limit downtown to drop to 40 km/h

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Speed limits are soon going to be lowered in the downtown core.

The nine-block area from South Railway Street to Fourth Avenue and from First Street to Fourth Street will have the speed limit lowered to 40 km/h on June 29.

The City of Medicine Hat says making downtown more pedestrian-friendly was a key finding from public and business engagement.

An investigation of speed limits city-wide is part of the city’s ongoing Municipal Development Plan review. The speed limit review looked at maintaining vehicle, cycling and pedestrian safety; road design characteristics and adjoining land use; number, location and type of intersections; and posting a speed that most drivers consider safe and reasonable under ideal conditions.
