Mavericks honour Bob Will with Plaid for Dad jerseys

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Even though there won’t be any Medicine Hat Mavericks games played this summer the team has still managed to hit a grand slam.

The annual Plaid for Dad games in June have become one of the highlights of the Mavericks schedule. Players wear special jerseys to start the games and then they are sold for charity.

The team will still produce special jerseys though and they’ll honour long-time season ticket holder and Plaid for Dad supporter Bob Will.

Will passed away in December.

“I thought it was a good choice for him because he was always doing our Plaid for Dad days and we put his last name and his number, his favourite number four and even a little bit of a touch to his Boston Bruins black and yellow in the jersey,” said Mavericks owner and general manager Greg Morrison.

Morrison support has been strong for the jerseys, with only a handful of the more than 40 jerseys left.

Will was active in many community efforts, including the Wear Plaid for Dad golf tournament, Pants Off for Men’s Health, 100 Men Who Give a Damn and the Medicine Hat Cubs hockey team.

“I’ve known him for four to five years and I think seeing those jerseys, people will wear those jerseys forever, whether it’s on those games or around town or just to some regular season games, not necessarily the plaid for dad days,” Morrison said. “It’s nice to have a piece of that, that whenever you see that 4 it will remind us that he was a big part of our organization.”

The jerseys sell for $100 and you can get yours by contacting the Mavericks through social media or email. Payments are being taken through e-transfer and proceeds will go to the Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation.

Morrison said the team plans to produce jerseys for its another of its usual special games — Superhero Night — later this year.
