Medicine Hat Public Library reopening next month

Jun 11, 2020 | 4:03 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public Library is planning their reopening next month, but will be starting small.

On July 6th the doors will open with new additions like plexiglass shields, signage, and no seating area.

Chief Librarian Ken Feser says they miss the public and it will be like a grocery store type service to start.

Where the public comes in, browses for materials, then leaves when checked out.

There will be no in-person programming offered at this time.

“I’ve really looked to retail stores and grocery stores, they’ve been so courageous this whole time so I’ve looked at what they’re doing and we’re really trying to copy their good example.”

Feser says they will be hiring some of their staff back as well.

The city has also been doing upgrades on the building which includes fixing an old electric panel.

“So they’re going to come in and replace that, it’s the whole electrical panel for the building so that’s a big job and it shuts the power off and that’s happening at the end of June. And so that was one of the things we thought about do we want to open and three days later have to shut down for this major thing so we thought better just wait for it to be done.”

Feser says the “no-touch” pick-up service will still continue.

He says over 7-thousand items have been picked up so far while they were closed.
