Man arrested, charged after fleeing RCMP

BROOKS, AB – An Alberta man is facing charges after fleeing from Brooks RCMP in a stolen vehicle.

Mounties say at about 3 p.m. on Thursday they received a call from a woman who said an adult acquaintance stole her vehicle, a red 2018 Jeep Cherokee.

Upon arrival at the scene just north of the city, police attempted a traffic stop. According to police, the wanted vehicle turned around and drove toward two RCMP vehicles β€œat a high rate of speed and in an apparent attempt to ram them.”

Officers were able to avoid a collision and pursued the vehicle until it entered city limits, at which point to pursuit was stopped in the interest of public safety.

Officers soon after found the vehicle and suspect in the back alley in the 400 block of Fourth Street West. The suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of cocaine.

Riley Mraz, 20, of Edmonton, is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of assault with a weapon, flight from police, possession of a controlled substance and unauthorized driving of a motor vehicle.

Charges of impaired operation of a conveyance are pending. After a bail hearing, Mraz was released and is scheduled to appear in court on July 22 in Brooks.
