MEDICINE HAT – More details are emerging regarding an arrest made on Thursday following a standoff at a Ross Street home.

Police say the suspect arrested following the approximately two-hour confrontation where the man had barricaded himself in a residential home was the subject of a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) investigation into importation of prohibited weapons and devices.

On May 7, city police say CBSA intercepted a package from China containing a firearm silencer destined to a residence in Medicine Hat.

While executing a search warrant connected to the allegation, the confrontation between police and a man saw a suspect hit with a less-than-lethal police round.

Police say as a result of the search warrant, $4,700 in counterfeit US currency was seized along with a number of prohibited weapons including a silencer, conductive energy weapon, nunchuks, throwing stars, switch blade and pepper spray.

The man whose name has not be released is facing six allegations of possession of prohibited weapons along with a single count each of possession of counterfeit money and assaulting a police officer.
