City set to record warmest weekend of the year, AHS reminding residents of heat safety

MEDICINE HAT – Hatters know a thing or two about hot weather with southern Alberta having one of the highest thresholds for an Environment Canada heat warning in the country. But that doesn’t mean they are immune to the effects of the hot weather set to de

scend on the region this weekend.

Dr. Shobhit Maruti, AHS South Zone medical officer, is reminding residents of some basic steps to keep healthy in the sun – consider doing outdoor activities during the cooler part of the day, wear light-coloured long sleeve shirt, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as well as hydrate.

Maruti stressed to keep hydrated in the heat, “stick to water. Some people say juice or pop but water is best because what you are losing is water.” He added drinking alcoholic beverages can have the opposite effects.

As for the added issue of COVID-19 as residents begin to utilize outdoor spaces more due to the warmer weather, Maruti stressed the fundamental pandemic safety protocols.

“Physically distancing is the most important,” he said and, “wash your hand, wash your hand, wash your hands.”

Used properly, Maruti says masks can also work.

As for popular swimming areas such as Elkwater Lake, Maruti says there is not a lot of information regarding transmission of COVID-19 in such waterbodies but those looking to take a dip should follow the same distancing protocols on land or in the lake.

Lastly, Maruti said, “please, please, please don’t leave your pet or child in the car – especially with the windows rolled up.”
