Trees to come down for Riverside rink relocation

May 22, 2020 | 10:46 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Trees will soon be removed from Heald Park to make way for the relocation of the Riverside rink.

The City of Medicine Hat’s parks and recreation department says several Siberian elm trees and one white spruce tree will be coming down beginning on June 1. A city arborist assessed the trees determined they deteriorated to the point where removal is necessary. Other trees in the area will be removed for the relocation project as construction could further damage the health of the trees.

Any trees that are removed will be replaced with new ones within the city’s parks system, with date and location still to be determined. The city says replanting will be at a ratio of 3:1 minimum and take place once the rink has been relocated.

The city has posted a video on the work being done in Riverside Park.

The city reminds people to allow crews space to work safely, including adhering to physical distancing standards of two metres, and asks residents to follow all traffic signs and detours related to the work. Traffic on Second Avenue will be down to one lane while the work is being done.
