Women’s shelter meets fundraising goal in a matter of months

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is in a celebratory mood.

The society announced on Tuesday it has reached its 40th anniversary fundraising goal of $300,000.

“We are beyond grateful to our community who time and time again has stepped up to support us in keeping families safe from violence and abuse,” said Angela Kolody, president of the MHWSS board of directors, in a release. “We began the campaign in September 2019 in the lead-up to our 40th anniversary, expecting it would take a full year to reach our goal. That it took only a matter of months is a testament to how so many believe in the work we do in our community.”

The goal of the campaign was to raise $150,000 through community donations, which would then be matched by the society.

The $300,000 will go to the Shelter Legacy Program, an endowment fund launched in 2012 in partnership with the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta.

“As we’ve seen in 2020, the world can turn upside down in a matter hours, days and months,” said Natasha Carvalho, executive director of MHWSS. “It reaffirms how important building up our Shelter Legacy Program is, to ensure financial stability no matter what the future holds.”
