Grit City starting to return to business ‘as usual’ as sanitizer supplies increase

May 4, 2020 | 4:59 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been nearly seven weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic saw Grit City Distillery go from primarily making craft spirits to hand sanitizer. But as the supply of the pandemic commodity returns to normal, so too is the city’s only distillery trying to get back to its primary business.

At least, as much as possible.

Grit City’s dine-in facilities remain closed but they’ve adapted by offering gourmet takeout pizza featuring ingredients from other local businesses. That, along with its specialty spirits which have also seen products like its spiced rum sell out in a day.

Owner Andy Schmunk credits the community for allowing the distillery, which has been open for a little more than a year, and the restaurant, which has only been open for a few months, continue operations.

“I think the community has seen how important supporting local really is and I think local business owners, such as myself, we have even more of an appreciation for our community,” said Grit City owner Andy Schmunk. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”

Grit City has also partnered with other local businesses in recent weeks including, Mike’s Meats, Hell Basement Brewery and Lucky’s Speed Sauce, among others.
