MHPS: Impaired driving still a major concern
MEDICINE HAT, AB – A 56-year-old male is facing multiple charges and has police reminding Hatters about the dangers of impaired driving.
“Impaired driving continues to be a major contributing factor in fatal and serious injuries in Alberta,” reads a release from the Medicine Hat Police Service. “On average, 6,000 people were convicted of impaired driving in Alberta each year for the last five years. And from 2008-2016, 574 people died and nearly 8,000 people were injured as a result of alcohol- or drug-impaired driving.”
Acting on a tip from the public, police located a potentially dangerous driver on April 16. The driver showed signs of impairment and two breath samples were taken. As a result, the male is chared with impaired driving and exceed .08, two counts of Driving while prohibited, three counts of breach of probation and three counts of breach of recognizance.
The police sought the vehicle after being notified about a potentially suicidal male driving, possibly with a firearm. Police did not locate a firearm in the vehicle.
