MEDICINE HAT, AB -A local couple has made just under 1-thousand mask extenders for front line workers in Medicine Hat.

Professionals including those in the medical field have said the mask elastic that goes around the ears is uncomfortable throughout the day.

Laura and Mike Duddy have been running their 3D printer non-stop since April 5th.

And they have been donating the small piece of plastic to whoever needs them.

She says they already know of pharmacists, nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, and firefighters who picked up the extenders.

Duddy’s two sisters and best friends are nurses.

And her friend saw a young boy in the states was making extenders from his 3D printer

She says this was their little way of being home and helping people during this time.

“We ended up buying a second 3D printer. Our little machine could just not keep up with what people were asking and the messages I was getting it was clear that people want these, they need them. One of my friends messaged me and said that she had open sores behind her ears from the mask.”

The couple is expecting their second child this week.

They will get back to mask extender production once they are settled back home again.

You can message Laura Duddy on Facebook to request an order.

She says donations are not required, but they have received some. Duddy says if they receive donations the money goes towards purchasing more material for the 3D printer extenders.

She adds each extender costs 25 cents to make which includes material and electricity.

Duddy thanks residents who have donated.
