Supports for regional organizations during COVID-19 pandemic

Apr 7, 2020 | 3:27 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB -The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) is supporting the vulnerable during this unprecedented time of COVID-19.

Executive Director Chris Christie says their survey results will be out late next week which will show what the funding priorities are in the region.

Christie has also been appointed to the Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society.

And the council will be providing support as part of the province’s COVID-19 response.

Christie says the province is looking at this council to help advise them on pressing issues and what the government can do to strengthen the charitable sector.

“We’re hearing loud and clear that food security is a huge one. As well as the emotional and mental effects on isolation for people. So how do charities deliver services in a different way if they can’t be face to face? How do they get their service out to the clients and people who access them.”

Christie says over the next three months on a rolling basis, CFSEA will start to issue the local COVID-19 response fund to the greatest needs in the region.

“We’re hoping that our call for donations to the COVID-19 response fund will help us look at things because there’s going to be a long term effect to this, much more than just the immediate. So how do we make sure that we support our most vulnerable people through this long period, as opposed to just the urgent here and now,” Christie said.

Christie is one of 15 members from across the province on the council and is all are individuals who have worked extensively in the charitable sector.
