TORONTO, ON – Kristians Rubins’ hockey journey has stretched through three countries and numerous levels, but on Wednesday all the travel points finally paid off.

Rubins is the proud owner of his first NHL contract, signing a two-year, entry level deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs after two seasons in the franchise’s minor league system.

A two-year member of the Medicine Hat Tigers, the Latvian blueliner played 109 career games in black and orange and contributed 10 goals and 51 points between 2016 and 2018.

Following his stint in Medicine Hat, Rubins signed a one-year ECHL contract with the upstart Newfoundland Growlers and won the Kelly Cup with the club in his rookie professional season in 2019.

The 22-year-old Rubins is coming off a 47-game season with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, netting two goals and 14 points over that span.

Toronto also locked up Spokane Chiefs defenceman Filip Kral to a three-year, entry level contract on Wednesday.
