Renewable U closing in on land deal for renewable fuel facility in Cypress County

Mar 25, 2020 | 10:32 AM

Renewable U Medicine Hat is looking to purchase 80 acres of land for its renewable fuel facility near Medicine Hat.

The Cypress County land is located about three kilometres southeast of Medicine Hat and east of the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Dunmore Rail Yard, located between the Trans-Canada Highway and CP’s main line.

The company has an agreement in principle in place and has the funding in place to close the deal, which is subject to a number of closing conditions on or before July 1. The facility is a partnership between Grande Prairie-based Renewable U Energy and Red Deer’s Cielo Waste Solutions.

Renewable U Energy CEO Lionel Robins told CHAT News in January that construction of the refinery will create about 40-50 jobs and there will be about 25-30 full-time jobs once the plant is operational.

According to a release from Cielo Waste Solutions, the facility is being designed and engineered to initially convert up to eight tonnes per hour of multiple waste feedstocks (about 65,000 tonnes/year) into about 32.7 million litres per year of renewable fuels that can be blended into conventional highway transportation, marine, and aviation and jet fuels.
