EDMONTON -The Alberta government says they will begin reopening select licenced childcare centers to help the support the province’s core service workers.

In a press release issued today the province indicates they are working with licenced childcare providers to open up to 15,000 spaces to ensure care is available for those providing services needed during the COVID-10 pandemic.

“All Albertans are relying on those who are working in core service areas like health care. That’s why we want to make sure child care is available for those who need it during this crisis.” Rebecca Schultz, Minister of Children’s services said.

The childcare facilities will be chosen based on the close proximity to health care facilities and will reopen in a phased in approach, based on need starting this week, the province said.

Healthcare practitioners and critical infrastructure workers will receive priority, while spaces will also be provided to first responders such police and fire and others, the province said

Parents who qualify will be notified this week through their employer about the available childcare spaces.

Childcare centres will receive word from the ministry if they will be allowed to reopen. All others are to remain closed.

The province says the reopened childcare facilities will have to adhere to strict sanitization practices and will be limited to 30 people, including staff.

Parents qualifying for a childcare subsidy will still receive it, according to the province and centers are required to charge their normal rate within reason.
