Backyard rink

Rink of dreams takes over neighbourhood backyard

Medicine Hat, AB – Making a backyard rink is as a Canadian thing you can do in this country during the frosty winter.

For a couple of dads in the city’s Somerset neighbourhood, building the “Dad’s of the Decade Arena” complete with skate room, hot chocolate and, of course, a hockey net.

“We get busy in life,” said Landon Serbu, one of the dads responsible for the miniature rink. “We’re working all the time. We sometimes don’t have time for these special things.”

But Serbu says its all about the kids, “and if you want it, you just have to take the time to get it and it just brings you back feeling like a kid again out on the ice.”

That’s a sentiment very much shared by his fellow dad, Trent Pederson, whose backyard the rink is actually in.

“This is a rare lot in the city,” said Pederson, who called the ice surface the rink of dreams. “It’s enjoyable and everybody can come around they can all see it and it’s a sweet setup. So everybody is welcome to come out for a skate.”

Both Serbu and Pederson said they had a lot of help from community sponsors and want to thank them for the assistance.
