Sharing the warmth

Warm donations for women’s shelter

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Over 250 items of warm clothing like coats, snowsuits, mitts, and toques were donated to the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society this afternoon.

Donations were collected by Budget Blinds, local businesses, and the community.

Executive Director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society Natasha Carvalho says this is a huge donation and her heart is so full.

She says families have been struggling with all the snow and cold so far this winter. “Families don’t have coats. A lot of our families don’t even have winter coats for their kids. So the kids aren’t outside enjoying this weather and that’s where they should be having some fun.”

Additionally, a $500 cheque was also presented to the Women’s Shelter.

Those funds will also be matched in the shelter’s Legacy Fund for a total $1,000 donation.

Budget Blinds ran the Share the Warmth Campaign.

Co-owner Dawn Cameron says Medicine Hat Steps up for you every time you ask for something. “We thought, what can we do to help our community. So we thought about to spread the warmth – one of our products is warmth in the home, so we thought how do we keep you warm on the outside. So we thought which charity can benefit from us so we thought about the women’s shelter. It sort of evolved from there so quickly, we can’t even believe how well it happened.”

Cameron adds, through the Budget Blinds Cares Initiative, their local store also has a chance to win $10,000 for their charity of choice – being the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

That news will be announced next month.
