Firefighters remind Hatters to stay off the ice

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat Firefighters are once again reminding the public to stay off the South Saskatchewan River ice during the winter.

The city shared a message from Fire Chief Brian Stauth on Thursday on its social media channels Thursday morning, featuring a photo of piled ice Stauth observed youth playing on.

Stauth says river ice is extremely dangerous.

“It can change thickness from safe to treacherous in one footstep,” the post reads. “This pile up of ice is also an accident waiting to happen. Some is supported by the river bed. Some is not. You never know where you might fall through.”
