MEDICINE HAT, AB – The first four qualifiers for playoffs at the 25th annual Hat Charity Classic bonspiel have been determined, coming out of the ‘A’ bracket on Saturday.

Japan’s Yuta Matsumura rink and Canada’s Karsten Sturmay rink both punched their ticket to the quarter-finals, advancing on the men’s side.

Matsumura took down Montreal’s Michael Fournier in extra ends to advance, scoring a single point with the hammer in the ninth end to pick up an 8-7 victory.

In the other final on the ‘A’ bracket side, Edmonton’s Sturmay rink ran the Jason Gunnlaugson foursome out of rocks to win 6-4 in a six-ender.

Both await their opponents in the quarter-finals, as the ‘B’ and ‘C’ bracket finals will be played on Sunday.

On the women’s side, both the Ashley Howard and Kayla Skrlik rinks have booked their places in the semi-finals with victories on Saturday.

In a pair of tie-breakers on Sunday morning, the Shalon Fleming rink from Regina defeated Teryn Berlando 5-1 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Lacombe’s Marla Sherrer took out Sherry Just’s Saskatoon rink by a 5-2 score to also move on.
