11 cases of whooping cough confirmed in Lethbridge & Raymond in the last week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is urging parents to get themselves and their children immunized to prevent the spread of infections.

In just the last week, they have confirmed 11 new cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in Lethbridge, the County of Lethbridge, and Raymond.

Altogether, there have been 38 confirmed cases of pertussis in the AHS South Zone so far this year, while there were 58 in 2018.

Pertussis is a bacterial infection that causes severe coughing that may last for several weeks.

While it affects all age groups, infants under one year of age are the most vulnerable.

In more serious cases AHS says it can cause pneumonia, convulsions, brain damage, and even death.

“Immunization is the best method to protect against and limit the spread of pertussis. All residents in South Zone are encouraged to ensure that they, and their children, are up-to-date on their immunizations.”

If you are unsure about your immunization history or of your child’s, AHS asks that you contact your community health centre or public health office.

“Regardless of age, everyone is reminded not to share water bottles, lipstick, lip balm or drinks.”
