Former broadcaster receives 18 months in prison for Medicine Hat bank robberies

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former broadcaster who made national headlines after robbing two banks in Medicine Hat in 2017 will be serving additional time in prison.

Stephen Vogelsang, 56, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for two counts of robbery Tuesday afternoon in Medicine Hat Provincial Court. The sentence was confirmed to CHAT News from Vogelsang’s lawyer Greg White and courthouse staff.

The 18-month sentence will be served consecutive to his previous sentence on four robberies in Saskatchewan. Vogelsang was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of robbery in April.

With credit for time served, Vogelsang still has 4.5 years left to serve in prison on both sets of charges.

Vogelsang was arrested on October 20, 2017 after two banks in Medicine Hat were robbed.

Shortly after being charged in Medicine Hat, Vogelsang was also charged in connection with four bank robberies in Regina and Saskatoon between July and October 2017.

He pleaded guilty to the Medicine Hat charges in April.

Vogelsang’s case made headlines across the country, as he was the news director and sports anchor for many years in Winnipeg for CKY (now CTV Winnipeg). He was also a journalism instructor at Red River College.
