MEDICINE HAT, AB — The next round of renovations at the Strathcona Centre are underway,

Work on the centre, which provides physical activities for senior citizens in the city, began on Tuesday.

“The focus right now is on the roof,” said Scott Woodside, project manager with the City of Medicine Hat. “We’re replacing the roof with a standing seam metal on parts of it. Other parts when they get to it will be asphalt material.

“We’re going to be starting demolition of the siding hopefully next week.”

The pool and change rooms will remain open to the public, along with the fitness centre and senior’s activity space, while work is underway outside.

The city announced the planned renovations in May. It is the first major renovation to the building since it opened in 1979.

The Strathcona Centre will be closed starting September 2 to allow work to be finished inside, and it will reopen December 2.

Woodside says the closure will allow construction crews to finish the work quicker.

“We’re going to have some mechanical that we’re going to need to be doing and also replacement of the fire alarm,” he said. “We can’t really be working around people who are using the gym or any of the other programs, so the city made the decision to temporarily close the centre.”

During the closure, several programs that run out of the Strathcona Centre will shift to other city run buildings, according to Deidre Giesbrecht, volunteer programs coordinator with the city. She says all of the fitness classes will be running out of the Veiner Centre, pickleball will run out of the Family Leisure Centre and table tennis and bocce will be played at the Esplanade.
