Rattlesnake Lake plays host to WCWA jet ski races

RATTLESNAKE LAKE, AB – It’s a sport that continues to grow in southern Alberta, as the Western Canadian Watercross Association opened up their 2017 jet ski racing season at Rattlesnake Lake over the weekend.

Rounds one and two were held at Golden Sheaf Regional Park, with competitors battling choppy conditions on Saturday before the winds died down on Sunday.

Cory Rarick, event organizer and runabout racer, said this corner of the province actually has a decent amount of water bodies to support their course.

“We’ve got the river, we’ve got this, we’ve got Newell Lake, we’ve got Elkwater and there are so many different venues,” he said. “And, we’re really trying to get it out to the public that we’re trying to control this muscle situation that we all hear about, and you see the inspections on the highways.”

Fellow runabout competitor Philip Tschritter wasn’t as successful in the Sunday morning race, as he bit it coming around the corner and fell into the lake.

Although it wasn’t the result he was looking for in the morning heat, he said Rattlesnake Lake is the perfect location to kick off the season.

“To have it local for us that live here is awesome,” said Tschritter. “You get to sleep in your own bed at night so that’s always good, and lots of people came out to watch so it’s been great.”

The roundabout division featured 10 laps compared to the usual five or six due to the speeds of the boats, which can reach upwards of 80 miles per hour.

Rarick adds having the kids come out, try out the course, and assist the adults helps pass along the passion for jet skiing.

“That’s the backbone of our sport in terms of how the kids are coming up,” he said. “There’s a lot of fresh, new faces which is really great to see.”

Next up on the WCWA season is a stop later this month in Blackstrap Provincial Park in Saskatchewan.
