Vikings aim for strong finish to football season

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Crescent Heights High School Vikings are hoping to wrap up their season on a winning note.

After missing out on a chance to play in the Rangeland Football Conference Championship, the club will finish the season Friday night at the Methanex Bowl with an exhibition game against the Monsignor McCoy Colts.

The Vikings were scheduled to play Strathmore for third place, but the Spartans had to withdraw due to injuries.

“It was tough on Friday,” said Vikings head coach Dustin Ressler. “We really played well, moved the ball well. We just made too many mistakes.

“I really thought we had a team this year that could definitely make it back to provincials and challenge Hat high for that RFC championship. We were really emotional after the game.”

The Vikings were defeated by the Brooks Buffaloes 9-8 for a spot in the Rangeland final. Ressler says injuries took their toll on the team as the season went on.

He adds the loss was felt particularly hard by the Grade 12 students who will toss, catch, and carry the pigskin for the final time on Friday.

“It’s really an emotional time for them,” he said. “They’ve spent a lot of time with the guys here over the last three years, really trying to build something up, and knowing that it comes to an end, just like anything, it’s tough.”

Ressler says he’s approaching Friday’s game in a way to give his up-and-coming players some playing time, and give his players one last chance to play before the season ends.

He says next year is looking promising for the team, as many players are expected to return, and several players are expected to make the jump from the Parkside Pythons

“I’m looking forward to the off-season workout plan we’re going to establish,” he said. “The program at Parkside is going strong this year, and we’re looking forward to getting those kids up here, and working with them, and really building this program, and continuing to be a force in RFC.”

Kickoff for the Vikings and Colts is at 5:30 p.m.

The Hat High Mohawks and Brooks battle for the Rangeland Championship following the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Methanex Bowl.
