Shelter Rezoning

Mustard Seed shelter proposal heads to Medicine Hat planning commission

Oct 15, 2026 | 1:38 PM

The Mustard Seed’s proposed community shelter and navigation centre in Medicine Hat is moving through the city’s planning process, with a rezoning application set to be discussed by the Municipal Planning Commission next week.

The application concerns a property at 514 South Railway Street S.E., where the organization is proposing a community shelter and navigation centre.

The city has received an application to change the property’s zoning from Urban Villages and Corridors to Direct Control Special Use.

The proposed change would facilitate future development of the site as a shelter and navigation centre.

The application remains pending a decision, and the proposal has not yet received rezoning approval.

The Municipal Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss the application at its Oct. 21 meeting at 1:30 p.m. in City Hall council chambers, which are open to the public.

Following the commission’s review, the first reading of the proposed land-use bylaw amendment is scheduled for Medicine Hat City Council on Nov. 2.

Second and third readings, along with the statutory public hearing, are scheduled for Dec. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Residents who believe they would be affected by the proposed rezoning can speak to council during the public hearing on Dec. 7.

Written submissions can also be sent to the city clerk, but must be received at least one week before the hearing.

Residents can alternatively complete the city’s online request form to address council.

The city notes that meeting times are subject to change due to scheduling requirements.
