Alberta launches online tool to help residents navigate cancer screening

Oct 13, 2026 | 10:19 AM

Albertans can use a new online guide to find out when they should start screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, as the province works to improve awareness of early detection.

Primary Care Alberta’s Screening Programs launched the interactive guide at screeningforlife.ca to help people navigate screening recommendations and understand when they should get tested.

Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services Justin Wright said early detection can make a life-changing difference.

“This new online guide gives Albertans clear, accessible information to help them understand when to get screened and take an important step in protecting their health,” Wright said.

The province has screening programs for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, intending to reduce cases and deaths.

Screening can detect cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment may be more effective, said Kimberley Simmonds, CEO of Primary Care Alberta.

“We want to empower Albertans to make informed decisions about cancer screening and support increased awareness of recommended screening across the province,” Simmonds said.

The launch comes during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with breast cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada.

Primary Care Alberta also says it is moving toward paperless cancer screening notifications.

Starting in fall 2026, mailed invitations and reminders will be phased out where possible, with information instead delivered through MyChart, the online platform available through MyHealth Alberta.

The change is intended to make it easier for patients to review messages, alerts and results, track their screening history and receive reminders to book appointments.

Albertans who are able to use the platform and have not already signed up are encouraged to create a MyChart account through myhealth.alberta.ca/help/KB/setting-up-myhealth-records.
