Advance polls open across Alberta on Tuesday in historic referendum on separation

Oct 13, 2026 | 1:32 PM

Polling stations opened across Alberta on Tuesday in a historic vote on the province’s place in Canada.

Advance Polling for the Alberta Referendum takes place from Oct. 13-17.

Nine of the 10 ballot questions focus on Canada’s Constitution and immigration.

The 10th and most contested one will ask voters whether they want to remain in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on quitting Confederation.

Monday, Oct. 19, is the official voting day, with results on the separation question to be announced the next day.

Elections Alberta has said it’s preparing for a record voter turnout in the referendum.

Voters in each riding can vote at any advance polling locations within their riding during advance voting.
