A few of the rodeo athletes from southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan had strong showings at the Canadian Finals Rodeo on Thursday.

Cypress County’s Hayes Howe claimed the best score in the junior steer riding with a 79.75.

The 15-year-old will have to continue that strong showing to have a chance at the overall title.

Howe qualified as the sixth and final position coming into the event. He now has about half the total winnings of the top overall rider for the year.

Looking at the aggregate title factoring in only the five rides, Howe sits in second place heading into day three.

Bull rider Grady Young of Leader had the top ride scores on both Wednesday and Thursday at the CFR. He was the only rider to stay on the bull on Wednesday, scoring an 87, before bettering it with an 87.5 on Thursday.

He holds a 174.5-to-85 lead on Garret Green for the aggregate title, with Green the only other rider to post a score on Thursday.

Young, 20, has built a strong lead in the overall title race. He was only a little over $100 behind Lonnie West for the top spot coming into CFR, and Young’s lead is now almost $23,000 after two of five rides.

Maple Creek’s Kahl Wasilow, who came into the event as the eighth-ranked bull rider, has yet to register a scoring ride, with three rounds to go. Eatonia’s Dakota Buttar entered the event sitting in fifth place and is in the same position with no scoring rides.

Consul’s Braden Brost had the second-best time in team roping with teammate Tuftin McLeod of Waldeck, Sask., on Thursday at 4.4 seconds.

That brings the pair to fifth in the aggregate title chance after not registering a time on Wednesday.

Brost moved up to sixth in the team roping healer category factoring annual winnings, passing Cypress County’s Trent Tunke, who dropped one spot to seventh after two rounds of no times.

In tie-down roping, Cypress County’s Tyler Popescul recorded a score for the second consecutive day.

The 11.6 seconds wasn’t as fast as Wednesday’s 9.5-second score, but in the aggregate Popescul is at sixth. He had the eighth-best time on Thursday, after the fifth-best on Wednesday.

Popescul sits eleventh in the overall money race after coming into the CFR in ninth.

The CFR continues through Saturday.
