Dawson Gray set to perform at Medicine Hat’s newly renovated Monarch Theatre

The Monarch Theatre has opened its doors to host more live entertainment in Medicine Hat, with B.C. country artist Dawson Gray among the performers taking the stage following the summer upgrades.

Gray brings his “Bar’s Gone Now” tour to the theatre Wednesday night, with Julia Vos joining him as a special guest.

The performance is part of an expanded live entertainment offering at the more than 100-year-old theatre, which underwent renovations over the summer to make the space better suited for live performances.

The theatre reopened in August and has continued to show movies while adding live performances, including music and comedy.

Gray said it is exciting to perform at a venue that has made changes specifically to accommodate acts like his.

“With the state of event venues in Canada right now, like so many are closing down, it’s cool to hear like this one’s just getting going and to be on the forefront of that is awesome,” Gray said.

Wednesday’s show will be the band’s first time performing in Medicine Hat, as Gray said the venue also has a connection to his group, with the drummer being from the city.

“It’s kind of a hometown show for the boys of sorts,” Gray said.

“It’s our first show in Medicine Hat, which is always cool to come to a place you’ve never been and see people show up and some friendly faces.”

The show is part of Gray’s latest tour, which takes its name from his newest single about the closure of bars and restaurants across Canada.

Gray said the tour represents the culmination of more than a year of work.

“This is the first time we’ve taken the exact show on the road we want to take; we got the gear, we got the personnel, we got the venues that we wanted,” Gray said.

Vos was selected as one of the tour’s opening acts after Gray saw her perform at Boots and Hearts West in Edmonton earlier this year.

“The moment I heard her set, I’m like, we have to have her on the tour,” Gray said.

Gray said the band has chosen three female acts to serve as its main openers during the tour, including Vos and Annika Catharina.

The band has 11 shows remaining after its Medicine Hat stop before wrapping up the year.

Gray said the group will then travel to Nashville to write and record three new songs before taking time off for Christmas.

Wednesday’s show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Monarch Theatre, with tickets available for purchase on Tixx.ca.
