Medicine Hat College Rattlers find team and individual success in a busy weekend

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s ice hockey team split their regular-season opening games in Edmonton over the weekend.

On Friday, they lost 4-3 in a shootout to the NAIT Ooks. They followed that up with a 2-1 win over the Ooks on Saturday.

The Rattlers’ Zayda Summach scored twice in Friday’s loss, and Elizabeth Udell scored the other goal.

Mya Girard and Chloe Johnson each scored for the Rattlers on Saturday.

On the soccer pitch at MHC on Sunday, both Rattlers teams earned wins over Ambrose University. The men won 5-0, and the women won 6-1.

Joao Nescimento had two goals for the Rattlers men, while Bryce Pennell, Gavin LaBrash, and Ethan Sentes each scored one.

Scoring two each for the women were Duda Farias and Isabelle Techer. Alexis Ratke and Carley Indzeoski also scored.

Results from the Rattlers men’s and women’s exhibition basketball games against St. Boniface on Saturday weren’t available online yet on Monday morning. The women’s team will travel to W.R. Myers High School in Taber for an exhibition match against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The volleyball teams will travel a little further down Highway 3 to Barnwell High School for games against the Kodiaks on Tuesday. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.

The Rattlers women’s cross country team added another podium finish to its season, placing third Saturday at the ACAC 3 — Red Deer Polytechnic Open.

The meet featured the season’s first full-field Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women’s cross country race.

Concordia University of Edmonton captured the team title, followed by host Red Deer Polytechnic in second and Medicine Hat College in third.

Second-year standout Reyna Woodruff once again led the Rattlers. Woodruff finished seventh individually in a season-best time of 25 minutes, eight seconds over the six-kilometre course.

Rookie Meghan Reefhuis was the next Medicine Hat finisher in 11th, followed by Ellie Barlow in 20th and Sarah Laturnas in 23rd.

Presley Brennan finished 26th, with Hannah Ulm 27th, Jayda Hill 33rd, Ciana Catonio 41st, Ava Dyck 47th and Elise Stark 49th.

The Rattlers men finished fourth among 12 ACAC schools in the eight-kilometre race.

Rookie Alejandro Ayla paced Medicine Hat, crossing the finish line ninth in 29 minutes, 11 seconds.

He was followed by Ethan Mellish in 15th, Askia Tahirou in 20th and Spencer Wilson in 29th.

Nick Lefebvre placed 37th, Keegan Kolody was 39th, Will Miller finished 48th, Logan Mellish was 50th, and Christopher Nelissen rounded out the Medicine Hat results in 55th.

The Rattlers will return to competition October 17th at the Concordia University of Edmonton Open.

The Rattlers golf team is a week away from Nationals in Montreal. Late last week, three Rattlers golfers were named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Golf All-Conference team. Wyatt Bishop was one of five men, and Kiara Reesor and Rebecca Armstrong were two of five women named. Selections were made by ACAC coaches through a ranking system.
